@Mocha Dad: Sure enough. I actually have a plan to instill responsibility in him starting at a young age. We'll see how it turns out. We can't even get him to pick up his toys yet :-)

Thanks for stopping by! Love reading your tweets, bye the way!

Good to see that you are training your son to mow the lawn at a young age. Pretty soon you will be able to sit back and watch while he cuts the grass.

@Kenny22,

I appreciate your insights, and want to thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.

My initial objective in writing this post was to respond to a common statement made by those of faith, towards those of us who live our lives without belief in deities. I concede that you are probably correct that I was probably not as strict as I might have been in my usage of the word "morals", but I do believe that can and should be used outside the context of religion. I think dismissing the term as purely one of religion only fuels the fire of those of faith who would chastise the rest of us.

My working definition of the term "values" goes something like this: values are behaviors that comprise subsets of morals, and they are somewhat unique between societies, though some values are shared across all cultures. For example, greed is a value that would be designated as amoral behavior. Kindness and equality would be considered good values, and, therefore, moral. Of course, this is a working definition that may evolve as I gain wisdom, age, and knowledge.

I'd like to see some of the speeches you've written, and even papers (if available). Thank you again for your comment, and I humbly welcome further discussion.

I believe what you're speaking of is values. Morals are strictly based on religion. Morals are a set of rules that a purposeless set in place just to make those who believe in religion feel self-righteous because they are following God's will. I personally don't have morals and possess only one value, equality. I've written many papers and gave many speeches on my thoughts on morals and how they are pointless especially in this day and age. Morals are the reason our society is stunted. Take for example stem cell research. Stem cell research has the opportunity to be a breakthrough and save thousands if not millions of people. But people worried about their baseless moral ideas have stalled it.

All great points! I think the theist's answer to your questions about crimes committed by believers would amount to something like this: "Those aren't true [insert religion here]'s" Of course, that spawns a whole series of different questions :-)

Thanks for the comment and insight. You're right though, too many questions!

I had a conversation like this with a buddy of mine awhile back and the point I was trying to make was why does he believe "non-believers" have no morals? Was he trying to say that man's blank state without a "higher power" is a complete amoral state? So, if for some reason, if he renounced his "higher power", would he all of a sudden become an amoral person? Or would he still have morals despite the absence of the higher power? If "non-believers" are without morals, why are all of the crimes and what not around the world not committed by them? You would think there would be more crime considering the population of the "non-believers". And just watching the news, I would be led to believe the opposite would be true considering all the strife committed in the name of some higher power or other. Aren't a lot of the wars fought OVER religion? Is this a moral following? Man, so ma questions, and so few answers. :)

James, it often hits me how differently I see the world these days. It's pretty humorous how things that I wouldn't have even contemplated or approached three years ago are second nature; I can't help but share :-)

Ha! I never thought of it that way, but yes we are celebrating someone elses bowel movements. Never thought that would be happening a few years ago.
